Costa Rica’s hotel occupancy rate is at its lowest point since 2022

The Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH) says that hotels across the country expect an average occupancy rate of 77% for the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. This is the lowest estimate for the period since 2022, when expectations were between 84% and 85%.

The poll included properties of all sizes and in all areas, and 69% of them had already made reservations. Last year, forecasts hit 85%, which was the highest in a long time. The prediction for 2023 was 81%.

Flora Ayub, the CCH’s executive director, said that this time of year is a good time for both locals and tourists from other countries to take use of the country’s hotel possibilities. Ayub said, “Our country is known for its hospitality, good service, and natural beauty.” She also said that good outcomes in these months help firms keep their costs down and keep people working when things slow down.

Different areas have different projections. The Northern Plains are in first place with 92%, and Guanacaste is in second place with 88%. The Mid-Pacific is at 73%, Puntarenas at 72%, the Caribbean at 71%, and the South Pacific at 70%. The Central Valley has the lowest number at 68%.

All-inclusive hotels are the most popular type of stay, with 94% of people choosing them. 82% of mountain properties, 80% of beach properties, and 65% of city hotels are expected to be full. 51% of hotels expect occupancy to be similar to the 2024-2025 timeframe every year. Another 27% think it will go up, and 22% think it will go down.

There are further problems in the industry. In high season, more tourists come, but the dollar exchange rate, which is close to what it was two decades ago, hurts sales. Most of the money comes in dollars, but prices are in colones, which makes it hard for smaller businesses.

Ayub said that getting good outcomes today is very important for the overall health of the finances. She said, “These months bring in the money needed to keep operations and jobs going during slow times.” The CCH wants passengers to plan their trips soon to help the industry and get the best options in the country.
